課程概述

Optoelectronics include electronics and light. Generally, students in the Department of Electrical Engineering are unfamiliar with the light part, such as cameras, holograms, optical coatings, lasers, optical fiber communication, and other critical optoelectronic components.
We will start with geometric optics for image formation, extending image quality examination to optical Fourier transform for image processing and hologram. Then we go into two-beam and multi-beam interferences, the former allows us to check optical quality and build up sensors while the latter leads to the foundation of optical coating and the basis of a laser. The course ends with the introduction of active and passive optical fiber optoelectronic components for contemporary topics such as transoceanic communications, biomedical sensing applications, and silicon photonics.
Because it is an introduction, the content of the course is easy to understand. There have been even freshman students from various departments who scored high marks. This course does not involve in- depth physics of semiconductors but will give highlights when needed.

Basic working principles of optoelectronics will be described and how they are applied and developed to become various devices such as LED, laser, photo-detector, solar cell, optical fibers, etc. in our daily life will be highlighted. The following topics are planned to be covered.
1. Basic light properties and derived devices Ray, camera, and eye; Fourier transform in optics, diffraction, holography, and photo-lithography; optical interferometers and optical thin film; laser and Gaussian beam; polarizer and liquid crystal; solar cell.
2. Fiber optics and applications Basics of optical fibers; passive and active devices based on optical fibers; their applications in communication, sensing, biomedicine and quantum computing. 

課程目標
This course covers the basics and related applications of optoelectronics. The aim is to ignite the interest and imagination of any student who wishes to learn how old stuff such as camera, interferometer and modern stuff such as laser, optical fiber can be put together in a new perspective so that they can be enlightened to pursue their own dreams.
